OBITUARY
MR DAVID JOHNSTON An old and respected resident of Waihi, Mr David Johnston, died in the Waihi hospital on Sunday, after a lingering illness. He was 69 years of age.
The late Mr Johnston, who was born in Scotland, carao to the Colonies as a young mna and, before taking up his residence in Waihi, was engaged in coal mining at Newcastle, Australia, and on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. For more thna 30 years Mr Johnston was employed by the Waihi Gold Mining Company, Ltd., most of the time as a miner, but in the latter years as a tally clerk. Keen interest in many matters affecting the welfare of the community was taken by Mr Johnston, and he was particularly interested in school affairs. As long ago as the time of the late Mr A. H. Benge was headmaster of the Central School he was chairman of the School Committee, and his work for that school and other schools that grew up beside it was unflagging. He took, too, a prominent part in the affairs of the Miners’ Union, and was a foundation members of the Miners’ Pensioners’ Association, of which he was secretary until ill-health caused him to resign, and for the success of which he was in no small measure responsible. Mr Johnston is survived by his widow and a grown-up family,
The funeral will loave his late residence, Walker Street, for the Waihi cemetery at 2 o’clock this afternoon.
