DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS

BEFORE LAST GOUNGIL MEETING CONSERVATION OF TREES VICTORIA ST. IMPROVEMENTS At the last meeting of the Waihi Borough Council the various departmental reports were dealt with as follows: — INSPECTOR’S REPORT The inspector and poundkeeper, Mr J. Spence, reporting for the period ended April 2, said that nine cown had been impounded and three dogs destroyed. Notices to cut or trim hedges had been served on 25 persons. Explosives: During the month Mr Barringer, Government inspector of dangerous goods, made his annual inspection. In company with him the various places were called on and the conditions of storage were passed as satisfactory. Health: In company with Mr White, health inspector, a visit was made to premises where the drainage was not as it should be. Notice has been served to rectify this, also various other parts of the building. Unless this is done I think the building will be condemned for human habitation. Traffic: During the month 17 licenses were issued, eight of which were new licenses. The total licenses issued to date are Sl7. MUNICIPAL GASWORKS Reporting for the period ended March 31, the gasworks manager, Mr K. L. M. Cawsey, stated that gas made for February, 1938, totalled 763,100 cubic feet as against 566,800 cubic feet for February, 1937, a decrease of 103,700 cubic feet; gas sold for February, 1935, amounted to 53 6,000 cubic feet, compared with 410,300 cubic feet in February, 1937, an increase of 125,700 cubic feet. During the month of February 3S consumers’ requirements were attended to, 15 being meter trouble. There were installed during the same period one cooker, one copper and two hotplates. A leak in the main which was causing considerable worry for several weeks was located in the railway yards. The gas was escaping from the leakage at the rate of 2000 cubic feet per 24 hours. This portion of the main has been cut off in the meantime as there is no consumer using it. The new retort bench has been put into work, and I regret to state that up to the present time it has proved itself far from up to expectations. We are at present in communication with Messrs Welling and Company, Sydney, regarding the matter. 1 The report was adopted. 1

WORKS COMMITTEE The Works Committee reported as follows: —An inspection of various points around the borough was made on Saturday, April 2. (1) The clearing of the Mangatoetoe Stream was inspected. The work is progressing satisfactorily. The committee approves of this being a six-hour job. (2) A visit was made to the Victoria Street bridge. Here, too, the work is progressing satisfactorily. As it is now impossible to obtain steel reinforcing the foreman has been authorised to do the best he can with what timber he has available. (3) The drainage of Wilson Street, Tauranga road intersection, was inspected and found to be nearly completed. (4) Mr A. Manhood applied to have the water main extended to his property. It is recommended this be done, he to be responsible this year for full water rates. (s)The question of trimming trees in the Recreation Ground was considered but the committee does not feel disposed to make any recommendation. The matter is referred to the council for such action as it thinks advisable. (6) Petitioners drew attention to the condition of Junction road street and footpath. It is suggested the petitions be informed the work of effecting repairs is now in hand. It asks that attention be drawn to the fact that the land in the locality is continuously sinking, making it impossible to do any work of a permanent nature. (7) Morgan Street, near Mr J. Hamil’s cottage was inspected where it was found that a tunnel under the road had collapsed. It is recommended that the Martha Company be asked to protect the road by fencing where the road has collapsed and we put up a notice to the effect that there is no longer a thoroughfare at this point. (8) It is recommended that Mr C. Dick be given permission during the council’s pleasure to erect a motor garage on Boundary road (to the satisfaction of the foreman) between his gate and the power pole near-by; (9) that the road and path leading to Mr Sibley’s property be put in order; (10) that the attention of the New Zealand Railway Department be drawn to the bad state of the crossing in Silverton ' road; (11) that the foreman inspect the water supply to Mr C. H. Thomas’ property in Bulltown and report to the council on April 6, 1938; (12) that metal fines be put on the footpath in George Street near Mr W. Morrison’s property; (13) that the gas manager and the water department be asked to advise the foreman immediately when they cut up asphalt in the town; (14) that immediate application be made to the Labour Department for Scheme 13 men to do the following works: (a) Victoria Street (straighten and shoulder), (b) Boundary road (widen and straighten upper end of footpath formation), (c) Bradford Street (form and metal and drainage of road leading to Lawrence’s farm, (d) Symond Street (road formation), (e) Walker Street (road formation), (f) Frankton road (road formation), (g) quarrying, crushing and napping of metal for the above works, (li) clearing and deepening of drainage in Tauranga road paddocks to deal

with the water from the State highways. Note: The above works are estimated to take six men fully employed for six months Lo complete. In the matter of trimming trees in the Recreation Reserve, it was decided to take no action. The Works Committee was given power to act in connection with the installation of a 200-gallon tank at Mr Thomas’ property in Bulltown. The report was adopted.
