BANDS FOREGATHER

PREPARING FOR EASIER CONTESTS VISIT OF PAEROA MUNICIPAL FINAL CONCERT GIVEN The large attendance of the general public on the Recreation Ground on Sunday afternoon got their full money’s worth of music with two bands —Waihi Federal and Paeroa Municipal supplying the programme. The visiting bandsmen were decked out for the first time in their new uniforms, and it was indeed a pleasing sight to see them going through the quickstep evolutions. The programme for the afternoon was the same as was played three weeks ago by the two bands, viz., test selections, including the hymn tests and the marches.

The Paeroa band, under the leadership of Bandmaster Beilby, opened with the “C” grade test selection. “Titus” (Mozart), followed by the hymn “Fierce Grows the Tempest.” Without a doubt this young band will do credit to their conductor and to their town at Thames at this weekend. Judging by the hearty applause by the listeners the residents of Waihi will be pleased also. The Federal Band, led by Bandmaster A. Carlyon, gave a very fine rendition of the “B” grade test, “Stabat Mater” (Rossini), and later on played their test hymn, “Deep Harmony.” Critics expressed appreciation of the band’s efforts.

DISPLAY OF MARCHING At an interval, the two bands gave splendid exhibitions of marching, Paeroa being led by Drum-major Bridges, and the Waihi Federal by Drum-major W. N. Verry. It was a fine sight to see the members of the two bands fraternising together. In one march around the course the Waihi band was led by the Paeroa drum-major. Near the conclusion of the programme both bands joined into a massed march, led by Drummajor Verry, after which the combined bands, under the baton of Bandmaster Carlyon, played the hymn “Lead Kindly Light,” followed by the National Anthem. | The visitors were entertained to j afternoon tea by the Federal Band’s ! ladies’ committee.

Prior to their departure for home, Mr J. J. Callaghan, on behalf of the Waihi band, thanked the Paeroa bandsmen for their presence and help during the afternoon. He also congratulated them on their good showing and trusted that their efforts would meet with success at the Thames. Mr MacDonald feelingly responded for the visitors. EVENING CONCERT

In the evening there was a good attendance of music-lovers to hear the Federal Band give their final programme prior to the contest. In addition to the test pieces the several soloists, quartettes, etc., who are participating at Thames at the week-end had a try-out with their different, pieces. There seems every likelihood that some of our youthful bandsmen will put up creditable performances in the solo competitions. Messrs S. Callaghan and H. Mullins rendered several vocal items during

the evening. Mrs S. Sullivan carried out her duties as accompanist to all the solos in her usual satisfactory manner.
