ECCENTRIC VISITOR
MANUKAU LIGHTHOUSE INCIDENT.

AUCKLAND, this day. The lighthouse-keeper at North Head, M'anukau, one night recently saw 8
wild-looking man emerge from the bush, mount the Beacon, and wave a cloth or
handkerchief. Thp keeper concluded that the visitor was an escaped lunatic, and hastened to advise the police. The latter were unable to reach the lighthouse that night, but got in teach with two tushmen, who early in the morning found the man sleeping in the lightkeepers chair, the mechanism being none the worse for his guardianship. lie proved to 1>? a harmless old man suffer--
ing from ill-health, who had motored to' Titirangi, dismissed the taxi, and got lost in the bush till coming upon the lighthouse. He conceived the idea of signalling a passing steamer. He was in a very low physical condition. Ho <
was conveyed to the nearest police /station, Where he satisfied the police that beyond bis eccentricity there was nothing to warrant his detention., and ultimately he was handed over to his friends.
