The Evicted Tenants Bill

Debate in,the'Commons Press AMOoistion,—Copyright (Received August 28, 7.17 a.m.) London, August 27.' In the. House of Commons to-day Mr. llirrell strongly deprecated the House of Lords amendment in the Evicted Tenants Hill, and said, that no new .tenant or planter who was a bonii tide cultivator should bo conpulsorily ousted. Tlio 'amendment meant a triumph' for Lord Clanricarde, and doprived the Bill of its greatest value, namely, its pacificatory mcssago to Ireland; hut yielding to the superior force, and with the viow of saving the Bill, ho asked tho House to assent to tho amendment, and also to accept the limit of the reinstated tenants at 2000, Imt {o resist the Houso of Lords' substitution of' the word "compensation"-' for •"expression" in the fair market value. Mr. Kedmond declared ilia the'representatives of landlords in both Houses had deliberately wrecked Ireland's hopes of a settlement., They desired to cause turmoil in Ireland in the winter. lie added that ns long as tho planters on Clitnricnrdo's estate, or else-, where, were left in possession, there would he no end of the land war. When Ireland was trampii! tho Unionists were always obdurate, and' the moral was that if the Irish desired a settlement in 1008, they musLdoso tho ranks engaged 'in the movement, and be sufficiently stroiig to menace and overeortie the landlords' opposition. He admitted ■ tliat tho Hill was not worthless, inasmuch as it contained the principle of compulsory acquisition of untenanted 'land, but would fail to settle the eviction question. ■ Mr. Balfour protested against Mr. Redmond's direct incitement as a disgrace and an aspersion on the laiullords. The House endorsed Mr. Birri'll s recommendations, the Nationalists at the outset of the division, quilting the house. 1
