FOOTBALL.

The Thames Rugby rep. team beat the Auckland rep>s. on Saturday by 20 points i.o 6, Members of the Wanganui and Old Boys’ Club are reminded that there is a practice for all teams on Wednesday evening at tb-r Rec. shed. Commenting on the tour of the King’s College team? the Auckland Star says: The standard of football at both Christchurch and Wanganui is fairly good, but there dees not seem to bo a great deal of initiative, the beys playing mo-re of the old orthodox game than thinking for themselves. It may be mentioned that Harding, the old English international, coached the Wanganui fifteen, and their style of play is more reminiscent of England than' New Zealand. The Wanganui team is capable of considerable improvement. At Wellington on Saturday the Rugby games resulted: Poneke 6 v. Berhampore 5: Petonc 33 v. Athletic 7; Wellington 18 v. Selwyn 8; and Oriental 6 v. Varsity 0. The position in regard to tiro local Rugby Senior Cup competition now is that Old Boys lead by a point from Pirates- Aramoho and Kaierau. The Old Boys have had one loss and a draw, while Pirates and Kaierau have each had two losses. A win for Old Boys against Kaierau next Saturday will give them the Cup; n draw will make the three teams even (provided, of course, that Pirates defeat Marist?;, while a win for Kaierau will mean that they will have to play off with Pirates. Hawke’s Bav were beaten by Wairarapa on Saturday by 12 points to 5, the Wairarapa forwards overshadowing their opponents, and preventing the Hawke’s ■ Bay backs from getting under way.
