PRODUCTION AND LAND. OPENING OF FARMERS’ UNION CONFERENCE. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON. July 27. The annual conference of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union opened to-day. Owing to indisposition the President, Sir Jas. Wilson, was unable to attend, and Mr G. W. Leadlov presided. It was resolved' that unproductive land should be brought into cultivation as rapidly as possible. The conference also decided to agree with the principle of resumption on all land held for long periods without improvement. for selection for closer settlement. and to urge the Government to take more active steps in the matter. The following remit was adopted: “That the Government be requested to give the option of freehold to all holders of Grown lands for farming purposes. This afternoon the conference is considering the following remit from Taranaki: “That, as a means of restriction of traffic in land, legislation be provided that on a sale all existing mortgages be cither paid off or each reduced by a minimum of 10 per cent-, increasing one per cent, for every 10 per cent, or rise over the previous sale.
