INTER-COLLEGE MATCH. RING'S COLLEGE DEFEATS WANGANUI COLLEGIATE SCHOOL. The first match between colleges representing Auckland :md Wanganui was played on the Collegiate School ground yesterday afternoon, when-, after a hard, fast game the Aucklanders won by 17 points to 9. The weather was fine, and there was a large attendance of specta tors, who were treated to a very fine display of Rugby. The visitors owed their win principally to the fact that they were much nippier all round than the local boys, who Lave material equally as good as the northerners, but do not make the most of their opportune ties, as King’s College lads do. When the Auckland forwards hooked the ball it went out like a shot to Buokland (a splendid half), who was the best oack on. the ground. He played a - great game, and was ably supported by Heard i., first rive-eighth, who understands what is wanted from anyone in that position, and has the ability to do it The way this pair played should serve as an example to local players. They demonstrated what an advantage it is to a aide to hare men in these positions who are nippy, and realise that everything depends on getting the ball out to their supports with the utmost speed. Therein laid the chief difference between two teams otherwise very even. Though the Aucklanders scored 17 to 9, they were somewhat lucky to win by such a margin, as the game was very evenly contested. Two tries were secured by the visitors as the outcome ot mulling by the locals, the half cn qne occasion missing the ball as it came out to him from a scrum when Wanganui was attacking, with the result that the visitors were enabled to rush away to’ the oilier end of the field and score. Then the full back let a ball go through his legs, and before he could get to it again an Aucklander had it and scored. The worst bit of luck Wanganui had, however, was towards the end of the game, when they were attacking strongly, and in a passing rush one player threw the leather to the referee -(who was dressed in white, the same as the School), and what looked like a certain score was lost thereby. The teams lined out as follow; King's College (red jersey and black shorts). —Full-back, Buit; three-quart-ers, Palmer, Hope, Gribble; five-eighths, Kemp, Herd i. (captain); half-back, Butland; wing forward, Farquhar; forwards, Johnston, Keegan, Walker, Mitchell, Leicester, Herd ii.. and Hosking. Wanganui Collegiate School (white). — Pull-back, Hewitt: three-quarters, McDonnell, Boyd, Bayley; fivis-eighths, 11. S. H Gilmer captain). Collier; halfback. Babbage; wing forward, Hobson; forwards, \oung .1. 11. H. Gilmer, Lethbridge, Borrivt, Doole, Jansen, Parsons. THE PLAY. Winning the tos , King’s defended the northern goal, with a slight breeze against them. Some even play followed the kick-off, first one side and then the other attacking. Bayley marked near the touch line, and" Collier made a good attempt at goal. Then Bayley made a fine run up the line, and some good passing by the whites took play to near King’s ‘line, where Gilmer was grassed in the nick of time. The reds rushed play vit to midfield, Keegan and Herd i ‘being prominent. The whites got in some pretty but ineffective passing. A great line kick by Boyd put the reds in danger, and Gilmer was all but in after some nice passing. Again the whites got going, but Collier’ dropped the ball. Herd i. relieved the pressure temporarily with a fine kick, but the locals returned to the attack, and the reds were bard at it defending until Buckland broke through. He was thrown out, but fumbling by the local half let the visiters (headed by Keegan) away to near the Wanganui line, where Herd 1. secured and kicked across the field to Oribblc. who got the ball and rolled over. Herd i. lacked a splendid goal. King’s College 5 Wanganui 0 Wanganui attacked on resuming, but the reds kept them out, arid Buckland, Herd i , and Gribble took play to tho locals’ quarters, where Kemp missed a pass. Then Hope tried to pot, but missed. From a scrum near the line, Buckland secured and dashed over. Herd’s kick was good, but missed. King’s College & Wanganui 0 The whites soon invaded Auckland territory, and Collier kicked a magnificent goal from near touch, close to the half-way line. It was a great kick and earned' the applause of spectators and visiting players. King’s College 8 Wanganui 3 Encouraged by this success, the local boys quickly attacked again, and once more Collier distinguished himself by kicking a lovely goal from a penalty. King’s College 8 Wanganui S Good play by Btickland followed the resumption, but Gribble missed a pass, and the whites get close to the lino. Collier kicking a poster from a penalty. Each side attacked in turn, good tackling stopping each rush. On one occasion when Wanganui were attacking tho Auckland full-back ran right in front of his own goal, where he was grassed, and the whites, securing, threw the ball about well. Finally Gilmer made a good opening, and passed to McDonnell, who showed pace and scored at the corner. Collier’s kick went astray, and half-time was sounded with Wanganui a point to the good— Wanganui 9 King’s College 8 On changing ends the visitors re arranged their backs. Palmer going into tho centre and Hope out on the left wing. The local forwards rushed near the reds’ line, wher# Bayley was grassed by Hope. Then Gribble upended McDonnell well. Farquhar darted away, but ihe whites returned to the attack, and Collier essayed a pot at goal but missed. Wanganui kept up the attack, and a passing rush near the line looked dangerous, but McDonnell dropped the ball. Again McDonnell, Gilmer, and Bayley got going, but the defence was solid, and then Buckland, Herd, and Gribble participated in, a passing rush for the visitors, the ball going back to Herd, who kicked right down the field, and the whites were penalised for obstruction. Herd's kick failed. King’s maintained the pressure, and Keegan had a shot from a peralty but missed. Then Buckland marked cleverly, and Herd landed a splendid goal. , King’s College ,j H Wanganui —. 9 At it again, it was not long before the visitors had Wanganui on the defensive again, and as the outcome of some clever play they once more scored. Herd secured and booted across to the
