CASTLECLIFF WHARVES

ALTERATIONS SUGGESTED BY MR MEULI. TO EFFECT A SATING OF A 20,000. As the outcome of suggestions thrown cat by Mr N. Meuli to his fellow mciubers on the Harbour Board, the engineer (Mr Haszajtl) is preparing plans for the proposed deviation of the Castlochff wharf, which if adopted will effect a saving of not less than ,£20,000 in the Board’s harbour improvement si hen\-j. The erection of wharves and sheds is ono of Hie biggest items in the Beard’s proposals, to give effect to which it was intended to alter tho j»sition of the railway station, yards and lines at Castlccliff, and undertake other expensive work. Mr Meuli now suggests that, instead of digging into the sandhills to secure a site for one of the big sheds and shifting the railway Rues and sidings, a ynore of laud should be reclaimed along vhich a wharf could be constructed, which would enable operations to be carried out without let or hindrance. The now proposal, if carried out, would leave the station, line and side-ir-gs Intact, provide a wharf 700 feet long and a new shed 509 feet by 75 feet, and what is not tho least important feature is that the scheme can be carried out at once. The spoil from tiie turning basin can be utilised for the reclamation, and if necessary sand may bo taken from the adjacent hill for the ‘ame pur(!ose. The projected alterations would enable the site of the r-Hier proposed sheds to be located at more convenient points, and provide for their enlargement. Ere recently-erected shed on the fartleciiff wharf is 280 feet by 40 feet, pnd four other larger sheds are proposed to be built, cacti of 450 feet by 75 feet. The alterations suggested by Mr Meuli would enable those sheds to bo lengthened if found necessary. At the present time there is a groat outcry for more shed accommodation. New buildings are urgently required, and as the Board hopes to’berth ocean liners at Castlccliff, it is imperative provision must be made for the storage and hauling of goods. This work fan be taken m hand in conjunction hith the harbour improvement scheme, rnd wo hope shortly to be in a position to announce that Mr Menli’s suggestions, which already have the approval of the Boards engineer, have been adopted by the Board and sanctioned by the Marine Department.
