IMMIGRANTS COMPLAINTS

MINISTERIAL 'EXPLANATION. (By Telegraph.—Special to “Herald”) WELLINGTON, July 23. The Hon. Mr Nosworthy, Minister in Charge of the Immigration Department, suggested in the course of a reply to Mr Fraser (Wellington Central) that certain people are trying to do all they possibly can to raise objections to immigration and discourage immigrants; but he said “we shall adhere to the policy the Government has laid down in spite of criticisms always levelled at my Department.” This reply was based on complaints by the Mahana immigrants published in Dunedin, but Mr Nosworthy said he had not read this report. Another effort was made by Labour members to discover if any member of the Government is aware that already some of the Mahana immigrants have applied to the Wellington Charitable Aid Board for assistance, but the Ministerial reply was that the question must be tabled.
