An Auckland writer states that the Wanganui cross-country rider E. Copestake, who will ride Combustion in his hurdle engagements at Asbburst next week, returns to Takapuna, where he will ride Movement and Te Toa in the hurdle events . Th latter pair, are members of P. Johnston’s team.

Listowel, who earned place-money, in each of his engagements at Ellerslie, is a two-year-old who impressed quite a number of keen enthusiasts as likely to make good later on. He is a chestnut son of Absurd.

The favouritism displayed for Artilleryman in conneitcno with thoV.R.C. Derby was such that it was a case of the bookmakers demanding odds from backers of the Comedy King colt. It is stated that fully £4OO was invested on the favourite at even money on the day before the race. Despite the fact of Tar am Jack being loaded with the steadier of 13.2 in the Cup Steeplechase at Fleming ton on the second day of the V.R.G. meeting, the son of Spalpeen was sent out favourite. The best he could do, however, was tp finish in fourth position. Jiu Jitsu, who has been acquired by Mr H. Hickey from Mr W. Cleaver, of Hawera, is a'6-year-old mare by Guianforte—lseulfc. She has won throe flat races and has proved a fair performer over hurdles.

The running of Mr A. B. Williams’ high-class colt Humbug at Riccarton goes to justify the claim that ho is “the best for some years.” Prior to Lis appearance at Riccarton he bad won on the three occasions on which he had started. His scores were in respect of the Juvenile Handicap (4 furlongs) at Napier Park, the Hastings Stakes, and the Juvenile Stakes at Wellington. He had. bad luck in being left at the barrier in the Welcome Stakes at Riccarton, otherwise would have done better than second place. The Juvenile Plato, however, fell to his lot.

Humbug is a notable horse apart from his great speed. In colour chestnut, he has extravagant white markings and a light coloured tail. A northern scribe writes: “We are nob accustomed to see many horses racing so splashed with white, much less good ones, but they come in all shapes and in a variety of shades, and if a variegated one should come along and display smashing good form and maintain it throughout a season or two. it will always be something to talk of as out of the common. Imported Absurd is getting them like himself, with speed, and if the present yearling crop turn out as promisingly as the second seahon gets of his are doing this year, success at the stud will be assured.
