GONVILLE TOWN BOARD

The monthly meeting of the Gonville Town Board held on Wednesday, when there were present: Corns. J. C. Arnold (chairman), G. G. Bullock, R. 6. Birth, W. J. Gilbberd, N. P. Svonson.—Leave of absence -was granted to Corns. Thazer on acount of indisposition and Pearce who is away from town. LAMP.—In regard to an application to have the street lamp near the hoepital shifted to opposite Cavell Place, it was resolved that consideration be deferred. VALUATION. —Mr G. Henderson wrote protesting against what he considered the exorbitant valuation of his nroperty.—Resolved to reply that the Board was not responsible for the valuation, which was done by the Valuation Department. DRAINAGE.—Mr T. B. Slipper wrote on behalf of Mr A. G. Rogers asking that the drainage ne extended to his property in Punri Street.—The engineer said the extension would serve four houses, and the estimated cost would be .£47 12s 6d.—Resolved that the work he dene out of balance of drainage loan. WAY LEAVE. —The N.Z. Refrigerating Company wrote that flood damage to their wharf necessitated the shitting of their water service under the river bank road to a point above the wharf, and applied for permission for the new pipe L. cross ihe road.—Permission granted, EEOSr.tV.—In reply to inquiries by the Board from riverside residents as to whether they were willing to pay for protection cf the properties from erosion., letters were received from Messrs H. J. Duigan. J. R. Richardson, €, H. Davies, S. hi. Cooper, and Mrs H. Harper, stating that there was no erosion of their properties, and that protection was not lequired. The N.Z. Refrigerating Company wrote, that it was taking steps for the protection of its own frontage —The Town Clerk reported that the Board’s solocitors had stated a case for the opinion of Mr Martin, solicitor to the Municipal Association. He also tabl’d the opinion which had been received from. Mr Martin. The opinion, which covered the subject fully, stated that the boundary of the harbour district shifted with the erosion, and was now the present high-water mark, while the Town Board’s boundary is tile bank of the river as it now exists. The Town board had power to erect and maintain protective works, but subject to the provisions of the Harbour Act, and leave must be obtained from the owners of property where necessary, and from the Harbour Board. The Town Board could raise a speciai loan over a defined area for ihe purpose, but the consent of the Government to the loan would be necessary. The Town Board would have no jurisdiction over works in the bed of the river, but with regards to works on land within the Town District it could forbid the tying of boats, etc., thereto, and also traffic thereon.—lt was iesolvecl to erect notices prohibiting boats, logs, etc., being tied to the timber wall or fastened to the banks, or the damaging of the same in any way. GRAVEL.—It was resolved to authorise the Engineer to obtain prices for the delivery of gravel or clay at suitable depot spots throughout the district, in' order that time might be saved/ when work had to bo done. •

EEPOKT.—The Engineer’s monthly report, which dealt only with routine work, was reeived.
