TENNIS

GONYILLE TENNIS CLUB. The Gonville Club held its official opening for the season on Saturday, when there was a good muster of players and visitors, and a most enjoyable afternoon was spent. A refreshing cup of tea and tasty refreshments were dispensed by lady members of the club, and were much appreciated. The opening ceremony was performed by the club’s president (Mr Fletcher), and during the afternoon a progressive tournament was played- for trophies presented by Mrs G. Pratt. The winners were Mrs Irwin and Mr T. Irwin. A large number of new members have joined, the courts have been top-dressel, and a highly-successful season is assured. ST. JOHN’S CLUB. Although the weather was wet on Saturday morning, four of the courts were playable during the afternoon. Several combined and double matches ,were got off, including the following; Marrinep and Miss Carroll, rec. 5, beat Sutherland and Miss Porteous, rec. 20, 60—46; Lane and -Miss Moffatt, rec. 5, beat Roach and Miss Hart, rec. 35, 60—60: Newton and Mrs Scrivener, rec. 8, beat Cuthbertson and Miss Noy, rec. 20, 60—43; Lampe and Miss Swan, owe 15, beat Newtown and Mrs Scrivener, rec. 8, 60—54. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies, under the supervision of Mesdaipcs Bland and Sheldon, and was greatly appreciated by the large number present. The following ladder matches have been played;— Box beat Connop 9—B, Allen beat White 9—2, Lampe beat Wagstaff • 9—3, Lind beat White 9—4, A. Russ beat Box 9—3, Clay beat Earles 9—B, McDonald beat A. Russ, 9—B, Lampe beat Walker 6—4, 8—6,/ and Lane 9—4, Miss Allison beat Box 9—4, Mrs Davies beat Mrs Shel-. don 9—2, Miss R. Moffett beat Mrs Scrivener 9—7, Miss Calver won 9—2. The handicaps, etc, for the combined doubles are as followsWagstaff and Mrs Davies, scr., v. Walker and Miss Alexander 3; A. Russ and Miss London 26, v. Box and.
