A GENERAL ELECTION.
QUITE ON THE CARPS THIS YEAR. STATEMENT BY THE PREMIER. (From Our / Special Correspondents WELLINGTON, August 28. Mr Witty (Riccarton) got leave to-day to introduce his Parliamentary Election Postponement Amendment Bill, which proposes to repeal the Act of last year postponing the general election till the end of 1915. The member, in moving to Introduce the Bill, said there were many reasons why a general election should be held at due date this year. “Mniisters and members had no right to extend their terms of office, and there was no reason for assuming that the country was satisfied with them. The debate that followed was ,made interesting by some remarks from Mr Massey, who said bluntly to Mr Witty, “Don’t be too sure you are not going to get an election. I ara not going to stand In tne way of a general election,” added the Prime Minister. “There are members demanding an election who would be very sad if they got it. If a sufficient number of members of this House require an election they have only to say so and they will get it. If a sufficient number of the people of the country require an election they have only to say so and they win get it. I am preparing for an election in case it is required.”
