GERMAN COUNTER-ATTACKS SMASHES.
FURTHER BRITISH GAINS. (Australian and New Zealand Cable Association and Reuter.) Received April 16, 9.1’5 a.m. LONDON, April 15. Sir Douglas Haig reports that early this morning the enemy strongly attacked on a six miles front astride the Bapaume-Cambrai Road, under cover of a heavy bombardment of our new positions from Hermies to Noreuil. The attack failed everywhere, except at Lagnicourt, where the enemy gained a foothold after heavy fighting. Our counter-attack regained the village, our artillery inflicting the heaviest losses on his retiring troops. We advanced on the line eastward of Heninel, and progressed northward of the Souchez JRiver. We captured defences eastward of Lievin, from Riaumont Wood to tlie east corner Citie St. Pierre. Our troops are pushnig on to Lens. P3iere has been heavy rain since early this morning.
