FOR THE PERIOD ENDING 28 th. MARCH, 1917. ► Following is the report of the local Inspector of Labour (Mr E. w. (Johns) on the labour conditions in \Vanganui in March: General.—General speaking business has been fair during the period. Building Trades.—Bricklaying, fair. Sash and door factories, very" busy/ Sawmilling, good. Enquiries show that there is a shortage of men in all departments. Woodturning, etc., good. Engineering Trades. Agriculturalimplement, repairing, very good. Boilermaking, busy. Brass\and coppersmithing, good. Electrical engineering, busy. Fitting and turning, very busy. Iron and brass-moulding, good. Kangemakiug, quiet. Leather Trades.—Boot-making (repair shops), busy, with good men in demand. Saddlerv and -harness making, good. Clothing Trades.—Dressmaking and millineryr busy. Shirtmaking, fair. Tailoring (factories), good. Tailoring, (order), fair. Retail Trades.—Clothing, fair. Boots, reports show business to be brisk. Drapery, verv good. Groceries, quiet. Compla'ints are made that purchases are confined only to necessaries. Printing Trades.—Bookbinding, good. Printing, good; business has been maintained in all branches. Meat Freezing, Etc.—'fancying, carrying, and fellmongery, very busy. Slaughtering, freezing, and preserving, good? Slaughtermen are required. Coacfrbnilding Trades—Blaeksmithing, good. Coach' and carriage ouilding, verv busy; a coach painter is still required. Cycle and Motor Trades.—Very busy. Agricultural Operations.—The dairying industry has not been so good this month owing to the shortage of feed due. to the dry weather. Some cheese factories are now working every other dav. Unskilled Labour.—During t«he month five persons have been assisted with reduced fares.
