WELLINGTON, January 30At the Military Service Board the difficulties under which the slaughtering trade was being worked owing io the shortage of labour were emphasised hv ‘ secretary of the Slaughtermen's Irk... In one case the proprietors of meat works actually paid the fares of slaughtermen from Melbourne to Sydr ney, and from Sydney to Wellington, and from Wellington to Wananui. Under such an arrangement 27 men arrived -t week, and an undertaking had b- given that the Australians v'oukl ... - come under the ballot and would not replace conscripts. The New Zealand works were all very shorthanded. The appeals were adjourned smo die, the appellants to report regularly to the military authorities. A similar decisnin was come to in the case of a mg butcher. THE POSITION OF SHEARERS. WELLINGTON. January 30. At the Military Service Board a statement was made bv the military representative, who suggested that all shearers desiring exemption should make personal application. If they continued to work in necessary industries between the seasons he would be quite satisfied. The secretary of the Shearers’ Federation said that in normal times from .500 to 1000 shearers came from Australia, but only 200 had come this year, and he did not think auv world come next year. The Board decided to adjourn all shearers' cases for 14 days, and to summon individuals to attend personally. The Chairman said: NVe do not want to allow shearers to be at large for so long as the period existing between the long a period existing between the shearing seasons.
