BRUSILOFF MOVES AGAIN.
VERY FIERCE FIGHTING. HEAVY GERMAN LOSSES. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. PETROGRAD, January 25. The lull on Brusiloff’s front, due to bad weather, was broken by a. sharp battle in the woods and heights surrounding the Trotuz river. The Russians commenced the battle on Sunday with a bayonet charge. Very fierce fighting continued all night. The German 23rd division, being experienced soldiers, offered most stubborn resistance. The Russians finally advanced two versts, capturing an important defence. Two German battalions were wiped out, losing 2000, in addition to 400 prisoners and 10 machine-guns. THE RIGA OFFENSIVE. (Admiralty, per Wireless.) LONDON, January 25. Berlin official.—The artillery due] has been renewed south-west of Riga. Russian official.—After strong artillery fire, the Germans attacked between Tirol swamp and the river eastward of Kaincem. They pushed us back half a mile. To the northwards fighting continues. A GERMAN CLAIM. (Admiralty, per Wireless.) LONDON, January 25. German official—Considerable territory was wrested from the Russians on both sides of the Aa river, upwards of 1500 prisoners being taken.
ESSEN FACTORY DESTROYED
SERIOUS GERMANY. (Reuter.) LONDON, January 25. A large quantity of supplies was destroyed by a fire in a factory near Essen. The damage is estimated at a million marks.
