CROPS IN ARGENTINA.
Crops in the Argentine Republic suffered oadly last year from drought and locusts, according to information received by the United States Department of bommeree. The Argentine DirectorGeneral of Rural Economy and Statistics reported to the Minister of Agriculture under recent date, that “in the Province, of Cordoba, Santa Fe and Entre Rios, a portion of the crops is irretrievably lost, while the remainder promises only a medium yield. In the Province of Bueuor Aires the western region is in a relatively satisfactory condition, while all the southern region promises up to the present a good harvest. As to the Pampa Central, conditions arc fairly good in the south, and bad in the north.' This,state of affairs confirms my forecast of a harvest much inferior to that of the agricultural year of 1915-1916.” The River Plate Review says that a rain which fell early in November over a considerable area of Argentina did a certain amount of good to crops and pasture land, but was insufficient to modify appreciably the prospects of the next harvest. Figures forwarded from Buenos Aires by Consul General W. H. Robertson show these declines in Argentine acreage this year as compared with last: Wheat, 331.120; linseed, 793,205; and oats, 39,537, He also reports that the area seeded to wheat, oats and linseed which was lost in certain sections through the entire lack oi rainfall has now been reploughed and planted with maize.
