We should be pleased, howi ever, to see the members of the affiliated clubs more anxious to obtain the awards ; of the society. The departure from Wanganui of :Mr : C. Swan, who is at present serving wit!: ; the Expeditionary Force, has temporarily : deprived ns of a very enthusiastic worker, and we join, in wishing him a speedy, i and. safe return. i i The Head Centre has considerably exI tended its-sphere of usefulness, thereby promoting more wide-spread knowledge of , life-saving. In this connection our thanks i are especially due to Mr W. Lints, our honorary organiser and , representative in - [ New Plymouth. His efforts in organising classes and preparing candidates for the awards are greatly appreciated. The annual school competition for silver medals for proficiency in life-saving pro-i duced a good deal of interest; the follow- 5 ing. were the successful competitors:—;-M Girls (senior) —J. Higgle (Technical College); girls (junior)—l. McDonald and A. Perrett (Queen’s Park School), tied for first place. Boys (senior)—S. Annabell (Queen’s Park School); boys (junior), C. Deem‘'.(Queen’s Park School). Durimr the season the second annual competition for the school boys’ challenge shield, and the first annual competition' for the school girls’ challenge shield took place. Keen interest was taken in the. competitions, which are open to teams from all primary and preparatory schools in our district. Each team consists of four pupils who have passed the examination for the proficiency certificate of the Society, and the conditions are very similar to those of the Wigram Shield. The boys’ competition was won by the Queen’s Park School, and the girls’ competition by thoiQueen’s Park School A team. We again desire to record our appreciation; of fine action of the Borough Council in granting free season tickets for one season to all who gain a proficiency certificate. We thoroughly appreciate this very practical way of encouraging our useful work. Our thanks are also due to the local press for their willingness to give publicity to the Society’s objects, and to all those who have acted as instructors and organisers of classes. The following is a summary of the awards made during the season: Awards of Merit, 1; hou. teacher’s certificate,' 3; bronze medallion, 21; proficiency certificate, 73; elementary certificate, 28; total 126.
