THE MARITIME TROUBLE.
MATTERS APPROACHING A SETTLEMENT. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, October 3, After lengthy discussion yesterday between parties representing the Shipowners’ Federation and the officers of coastal vessels concerned in the Merchant Service Guild dispute, a committee was seUp, with Mr P. Hally as president, to. consider the question of hours of work as regards officers. The Guild fought strenuously to . have the masters and officers taken together,, but on the Federation guaranteeing, in the event of a settlement being made in the officers’ dispute, it would undertake to meet the masters within a, week to discuss the increase of wages, the* Guild’s representatives gave way. .. . The committee met : last evening. Mr Hally submitted certain proposals to the committee on the question of overtime, which is the main point in dispute. These proposals will be laid before the Merchant Service Guild and the shipowners to-mor-row morning.
