In the ballot for a strike against the throe shift system 19,516 Northumberland miners voted in favour and 9259 against. There was a la?ge majority against pithead baths. THE LITHCOW DISPUTE. Press Association.—Telegraph.—Copyright. SYDNEY, July 23. Negotiations for the Hon. G. S. Beeby’s arbitration in the Lithgow trouble proved futile. THE SUGAR STRIKE. Free Labour Sugar Not to be Handled. Received Julv 24, 9.30 a.m. MELBOURNE, July 24. Tho Wharf Labourers’ Union have notified the steamship owners of their intention not to handle free labour sugar. Another cane fire occurred at- Cairns, but the damage was slight. There was a hostile demonstration against the free labourers at, Bundaberg by a largo crowd of strikers, but no violence.
The growers in tho Mackay district have resolved to co-operato with other districts in resisting tho men’s demands.
