THE WAAHI GATHERING.
MAMA COMMITTEE. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, July 20. The “Mana” Committee elected by the natives present at, the gathering now in progress at Waihi, held its first meeting on Wednesday night under the presidency of Mahuta. Everything, it was stated, was ready for the visit of the AttiugPrime Minister (Sir James Carroll), and it was anticipated that the majority of the parties _ interested in, the ' scheme for the partition of’their-lands .would be present at Saturday’s meeting. Mahuta will detail the history of the various conferences, and explain the wishes of the natives and enunciate the general lines of the policy proposed. Mr Honare Kaihaii will follow with the, enumeration of the many difficulties that surrounded the alienation of native lands, and propound his ideas of the manner in which these obstacles to settlement might be overcome. The business in connection with the meeting was resumed to-day, when Messrs Kaihan, Kent and others were present The work consisted in going over 24 blocks, romprising an area of between ■4O,(J(K) and 50,000 acres. While the one committee was doing their work in one place the opposition, which consists of Pepa, Kirkwood, Eangikatitca, Tohiknro, Tarawhit and Keri Toko Teahn, were busy in another place, engaged in preparing a report for presentation to the Acting-Prime Minister when he arrives at Waihi.
