PRESBYTERY OF WANGANUI.

The Presbytery of Wanganui met at Marton on 7th June, 1910. Sederunt — Revs. G. Budd (Moderator), E. McCully, J. White, J. Ross, J. B. Hall, J. D. McKenzie, J. Chisholm, W. Mawson, G. K. Aitken, G. E. Evans, A.\ Morton, and J. Mackio; also Messrs J. 'Mcßcth,- J. B. Mcbean, G. Scott, J. Robb (Elders). Messrs McUeur and H. Hogg were also present. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Snow, Cameron, McFarland, E. K. Simpson, McCully, A. and G. McGregor, and Revs. Chisholm and Gordon. Rev. G. K. Aitken, of Foxton, was appointed Moderator for the- ensuing six months. Rev. William Mawson, M.A., missionary from Canton, being present, was cordially welcomed by the Moderator on behalf of the Presbytery, of which he is a member. The following motion was passed re the death of King Edward:—The Presbytery records its sense of the loss which the Empire has sustained in the death of King Edward VII. The goodness of God in raising tip for us Sovereigns such as have ruled the Empire in the persons of Queen Victoria and her late son is fully recognised. Under God we owe to King Edward the preservation of peace at critical periods in the inter-relations of the nations. Now that it has pleased God to call King Edward to His presence we pray that the spirit of wisdom and love and peace and power may be given to his son George. God save the King. On the motion of the Rev. R. McCully a vote of sympathy was sent to the Rev. D. Gordon in his illness.

Mr Hall reported,that the Eev. J. Mackie had been inducted into the charge of Bulls on 4th May. Mr Mackie got a very cordial reception, and the social evening on the evening of the induction was most successful. „ „ The report of the committee on visitations was as follows; That the topics for addresses to the congregation at visitation, and also the expenses, be arranged by the Presbytery; (2) that the committee respectfully suggest that the authorised answers to questions for visitation be duly recorded in a schedule and preserved as Presbytery records; (3) that in order to strengthen the Presbytery’s expense fund a collection be made at the public meeting with the congregation, and also for all meetings for induction of ministers to charges in the Presbytery. Eev. G. Budd reported on the vacancy at St. Andrew’s Palmerston. The name of the Eev. A. Doull, M.A., of Otahuhu, had been brought up at a meeting held on the 6th inst., and it was unanimously agreed to insert his name in a ca£. Tlie Presbytery approved of the application of Apiti congregation for a loan of .£SO from the New Century Fund to improve tiie Manse. There were also other requests for grants dealt with. The Presbytery heartily approved of the proposal to build a new Manse at Bulls, and hoped that the ladies’ guild there will have tlie nucleus of a strong fund on hand at an early date. Tlie Presbytery approved of the sketch plan for a new hall and classrooms at Feilding, and gave its sanction for raising the necessary loan. Eev. J. Chisholm reported that Mr Ewart had left Taihape, and that Mr J. C. Sutherland has succeeded him. Mr Suthrland begins his work under the very happiest auspices. Eev. Wm. Mawson garve a short address on Foreign Mission work. 'jSis deputation work, he stated, had been of a most encouraging nature. He expressed his gratitude for the help he had received from ministers, also from the press. Within the bounds of the Presbytery of Wanganui he had addressed 15 meetings, and the collections had been very satisfactory, amounting to nearly £3 per meeting. People had all seemed interested in mission work, and he hoped his visit would bear further rfuit. Air Mawson was heartily thanked for his address. Eev. J. D. McKenzie reported that as Dr Fade was not now going to China the St. Paul’s congregation had taken in hanc the payment of .£l5O per annum of Mr Mawsou’s salary. It was agreed to ask the St. Foul’s committee to look into the question of raising an extra £4OO per annum within the bounds of the Presbytery for Foreign Mission work. The discussion on Evangelism was deferred till next meeting of the Presbytery, which takes lace at Marton on 9th August. The meeting of the Maori Mission was held on 6th June, Eev. G. Budd convenor. There was a large attendance of members. A letter was read from the convenor of the Missionary Exhibition, which is to be held in Dunedin on August I7th, 18th, and 19th. It was agreed that three girls from the Tnrakina School, accompanied by Mrs Hamilton, go down to Dunedin for the dates mentioned. Sister Alison reports that she has begun her work in Waimeha, It is hoped friends of the church will remember that Sjster Alison is still an honorary deaconess of the church. Mr T. Cuttle worked for 10 weeks at Manunui, while Mr Monpies was away on deputation work. Mr Brown has accepted the position of working manager of the Maori Boys’ Farm till Christmas. Tlie convenor was requested to obtain tlie services of a student for next summer, while Mr Mon pies goes away on deputation, work. Air Alorton reported on his visit to Tnrakina School. He found everything in good order. The health of the pupils was good, and the gardens were beautifully kept. Two additional Maori ciders have been ordained at Taumarunui. Arrangements for drawing up the usual circular appealing for funds .for the maintenance of the school and the passing of accounts for payment concluded the business.
