Tho Former Fined for Assault

CHRISTCHURCH, June 12. For assaulting Stanley East, reporter on the Lyttelton Times staff, who he believed had written a severe criticism on his objectionable turn with the Chung Ling Soo Company, Ted Caiman was today fined jBIO and costs. Mr Bishop, S.M., said the Press was a free institution, ard had every right to protection in the discharge of its duty. Caiman was a first offender, and evidently lost his temper. He would not be sent to gaol, but the fine would be made exemplary.
