Nine Good Councillors Wanted
TO THY JEDITOB.
Sir, — The biennial election of councillors has come round again, with the usual amount of unconcern on the part of the burgesses. At no time in the history of the borough is there buch need for the selection <'f men of Round iud^ment and financial experience. The geii^i.iJ ar-eount starts the year with a debit of £6740. What will it be at the end of the year? Our water supply, gasworks, and tram ways accounts are just at that stage to require almost expert knowledge in dealing with them. The apathy and indifference of the ratepayer is most appalling. We hear him deploring the state of things, but not taking any action to alter it, perhaps for the reason that there is no organisatioa to whom he can refer. May I suggest as a remedy : that the Chamber of Commerce, whose duty it is to look to the commercial and progressive interests of our community, should take the matter in hand and nominate a few good men. There will be at least three vacancies, and no doubt some of the present members would do better of a rest. — I am, etc.,
