Obituary. — The Archbishop of Sydney.
[The Most Rev. William Saumarez Smith, Archbishop of Sydney, Metropolitan of New South Wales and Primate of Australia and Tasmania, was appointed in 1890 and entitled Archbishop in 189|. He, was born at St. Heliers on January 14th, 1836, and was educated at and Trinity College, Cambridge. A distinguished scholastic career was followed by the appointment to the chaplaincy to the Bishop of Madras (1861-1865). Dr. Smith afterwards becoming Vicar of Trumpingtori (1867-69) and then Principal of St. Aidan's College and, chaplain to the Uishop of Norwich 186990) Dr. Smith was the author of several ecclesiastical works, including "Obstacles to Missionary Success" (which gained for him while at College the Maitland Prize), "Christian Faith," "Lessons on the Book of Genesis." and articles on "Epistles to the Corinthians and the Colossians" in tho "Encyclopoedia Brittaruca."]
