CHAKUNE NOTES.

(From our own Correspondent.) A large number of Maoris from all parts of the North Islana are at present gathered at Karioi, where a prophetess from Napier is holding sway. The meeting commenced on Sunday, and will last about ten days or a fortnight. A leap year dance, in aid of the funds of the Ohakune Citizens' Brass Band, was held in the Hospital buildings on Friday evening, when there were over 20 couples present. The ladies took up the floor in the place of the gents, and were not at all backward in asking for partners. Tne floor was in good order, and the refreshments were provided by the ladies. The music was supplied by* Messrs Littlewood (piano), and F. McLean (violin). Extras were played by Miss Murch, Messrs Littlewood and Batchelor. Songs were given by Messrs McGion, Bachelor, Welsh, and Littlewood.

Mr. Kellor, Government engineer, ha« commenced the survey of the Raetihi and Obakune railway.

Sawmillers are now busy erecting sawmills in different parts of the Ohakune district.

The annual examination of the local school took place last week, and very near eyerv scholar passed, which speakp very highly of the schoolmaster, Mr. Gilbert Small. The local school is to have an assistant to help Mr Small. A marriage^bf considerable interest is to take place at Waiouru on Easter Monday, when Mr. B. B. Lockett, the genial Public Works storeman, Ohakune, is to be united to Miss Blay, of Wanganui. A lemonade and cordial factory is being opened up in Ohakune this week. Messrs Parsons and Co., late of Wellington, are the enterprising firm. Mr Isitt. of No-License fame, addressed a large audience in the main street on Saturday night, on the liquor question. He received a good hearing. On Sunday morningr he occupied the pulpil •»t the Wesleyan Church, Ohakune, and in the evening he preached at Raetihi.

A cricket match of considerable interest is to take place on fhe Recreation eround on Saturday next, -when the ladies of the town will play the genis 1 . A collection will be taken im on the ground 5 p aid of the Enelish Church bazaar.

The annual school picnic will take place on the Recreation ground on Saturday next.

Farms in the Ohakune district are now changing hands, and it is expected t^a* a number will be changing ownership during the next three months.
