Wanganui Herald. [PUBLISHED DAILY.] SATURDAY. OCTOBER 25, 1890. CONFERRING WITH THE KNIGHTS OF LABOUR.
A Wbliinoton correspondent writes : — "I have a strong impression that Sir Harry Atkinson will bring out a land policy that will astonish you. My reasons for so thinking are these : He sent for a number of Single Taxers, and had three hours with them. Since then he sent to a member of the Knights of Labour fof a copy of the Knights' platform, and since then has tried to obtain some papers on the same subject, Mr Duthie, I hear, is likely to propound a land policy on the 28th, and it may be a feeler for Atkinson." The facts stated in the above in reference to Sir Harry Atkinson we oan vouch for as absolutely correc^ and they show how anxious the Conservatives are to play to both pit and boxes. The difficulty is to keep their big land friends while dividing tho demosratic party. It is, therefore, certain that no remedy of an adequate nature will be provided to deal with the big estates, but that very liberal and tempting baits will be thrown out with respect to the Crown lands. Tempting baits were thrown out threo years ago, and the principal result has been wholesale dummyism, speculation, and monopoly. This i B what the landsharks want, and they call it a " liberal land policy." It is not a bad idea to attempt to catch tho Knights of Labour' whoie programme unfortunately has been drawn up in America, and not in New Zealand. The Atkinson manifesto is expeoted next week, and then wo shall boo wherein it differs from the do-nothing policy of Mr Bryce.
