A RUSSIAN BOY MARKED WITH
RED-HOT IRONS;
HE STOLE AN APPLE.
Word comos from the city of Bylstcok, Poland, of the fiendish revenge taken on a poor boy for stealing a single apple. Isaac Shilckewieh is 17 years old. One day he was passing by an orchard owned by Dr Sergin Freudianow, one of the wealthiest men in the province, famous in that part of Poland as a scientist.
Tho doctor saw the youth take an apple, and despatched his servants after him. Dr Frbudianow first gave lesao a severe thrashing. That did not wear out his rage, but scorned rather to increase his violence. "I'll toaoh you" ho said, "to rob people. I will mark you so that all the world ehall know you for the thief that you are." He bade his seivants bring him some stamping irons wh'ch he used about the place. He directed them to bind Issac so that he couid not move a muscle. He took tho steel lettors and set up the Hobrew word " ganiff " in Russian characters. Ho plunged the stamp in the fire until it was almost redhot. Then, with fiendish skill, he forced the iron upon the forehead of the boy. The viotim fainted. '■
The doctor then sot up the Polish word " diob," meaning thief/ in the frame. When it was sufliciently hot ho stamped the word upon both chocks. The fiendish doctor chuckled over thorn, and again he resumed his inhuman task of preparing the stamps. This time ho set the Russian word for thief, " bopr," in tho frame. For the third time he heated it and pressed the rod-hot stamp upon Issae's upper lip and chin. The awful screams of his viotim warned tho doctor that he must use caution. He carefully dressod the wounds and gave the boy an opiato; then he sont him homo. The barbarity of the deed aroused the poor people of the city and they threatened vengennco. Dr Freudianow beoame frightened and offered to pay the boy 10,000 dollars to have tho matter dropped. The money was refused, however, and a prominent lawyer has taken tho boy's case. The doctor has boon arrested.
