Tiikhb can hardly bo a doubt of tho justice of tho verdict returned by tho jury in the caso Grant v. the Munawatu Road Board. It was a jury quite competent to pronounce a sound opinion on the question as to whether the action of the Board had been reasonable, and whether the plaintiff had suffered loss through tho Board's action. Tho verdict will teach not only this Board, but all other Boards, caution and a duo obgerumco of tho rights of individual!". We have seen Boards regardless of such rights; tho mombors being under the impression they could do very nearly what thoy pleased. At tho same time tho Boards havo important functions to perform, and aro entitled to protection when they aro acting reasonably and legally. The Chief Justice referred to the custom of leining the execution of public works to the Bupor, vision of the member of the ward in which the works woro being exccutcd, and expressed his disapproval. Tho Board seems to havo mado tho mistako by not having the host engineering advice. But how is a poor Board with a limited incomo to procuro such assistant ? This is a weakness which tho present system of working local government does not provide for. Yob tho law at tho presont moment does contain the remedy. A County Council may consist of all tho chairmen of tho Boards in the county, which would prevent a conflict of authority, and the county, by providing a responsible engincor, ovory Koad Board v, ould bo entitled to his services. We have always recommended small road districts, on tbo ground of economy, and their fodoration in tho Council, on tho ground of strength and efficiency. If this system woro in oporation-and tho Counties Act specially providos for it— a wojik Board would bo sustained by tho combined Boards, while thoy v,ould be prevented from committing blunders by having tho best legal and f ngineering assistant in carrying out thoir duties. .

Tho Woodville Examiner pays the following high tribute to Mr Ward, R.M., :— During Mr Ward's term here as Magistrate he has earned tho confldonco and esteem of tho local barristers and the public, and they

In v paper on the moa givon by Colonel McDonnell bofore tho Wellington Philosophical Society ho related an instanco within his ow n experience which happened on the west coast of tho North Island in 1860. Sir George Grey (then Governor) was visiting tho locality, and an old Maori named Kawana Paipat stated that in his youth ho had joined his people in hunting the moa on the Waimate Plains. In answer to questions, ho desenbod tho mode of hunting, which was that when a party of young men started a moa thoy pursued it until thoy were tired, when another party took up the choso and so on until tho moa tired, whon it was killed with stones and sticks. Doubts wore expressed as to tho truth of Kawana Paipai's statements, whereupon he became exceedingly angiy, and said that if men wero brought with spades he would bliow them whero they could uncover the bones of tho moas from the old ovens. This w as promptly done, and as Kawana hod promised, a^iout throe feet down large quantities ofymoa bones wero found among the old ovens. It was explained by Kawana that the moa, when brought to bay, fought fiercely, striking out with its feet.
