Goldsborough has long been ono of the most success ul hones at tho stud in Australia, his breeding being such as is seldom equalled and never surpassed, ho being by Fireworks, from Sylvia, dam of Martini-Henry audother good ones. Sea Breeze was by The Barb (Melbourno Clip and Champion winnor), from Mermaid, by Fiaherman (imp.J. out o( Sweetheart (imp). SOU'WESTER, as a 8-year-old, won the South Canterbury J.C, Handicap, Ii mile", in 2min 42Jsec. As a 4-year-old he start d by runalng unplaced in the Geraldlne B.C. Handicap, won by lasman. He was not leen out again till the D.J.O. Autumn Meeting for the Dunedin Cup. of which year Cutts thought he had a moral ; but Sou'wester, at tho start slipped into a ditch and lost 150 yards, aud was thought to be hopcleisly out of it. However, ho stuck to his work, and by a desperate effort got up into tnird place, behind Lady Emma and July, who finished first and second, tho two miles and a distance being done in the fast time o< 3min sGsec. Later on the same day he was pulled out again, and won the Stewards' Purse Welter Handlcag^in which he carried Bst ,101 b. The following aay he was an even mouoy favourite for the S.J.O. Handicap, won by Lady Emma, the favourite finishing fourth. At Napier, on St. Patrick's Day, Sou'wester, Bst 21b, won the Napier Handicap 01 500 <ovs, beating The Poet and Nelson (who ran a dead heat for second ph>ce), and several others. Later on the next day he put up Sst 121 b, and ran second to Leonora, 8«t 111 b, in the Tradesmen's Handicpp 0! 250 soys, lj miles, behind him being Mischief, Wapiti, Tho Poet, and other well-known performers. Sou'wester started at 5 to 1 for the Great Autumn Handicap at Chr'stchuroh the following month, with Sst lib up, and finished fourth, a nose only dividing him md Lady Emma, after having cut out the running and held the lead until within a few lengths of the post, when Vanguard, Hippodamla, and Lady Emma shot up, and finished as named; tune, 2min 4Q}sec. Behind Sou-Wester were Tasman, Mischief, Salvage, Ike, The Poet, Rubina, Jlutaku, Captain Webster, The Jilt, and Leodogran He started with 7st 121 bup for the Easter Handicap, won by Tasman, the following di>v, but failed to get a place. The following week ao jonrneyed to Tiraaru, and with 7st 2lb up ran second to Tasman in the Timaru Cup, and repeated the performance the following day in the J.C Handicap, in which he defeated both Vanguard and Lady Emma. Beference to the Xm2 Record shows that his most billliant psrformanceswere as a 6-yosr-old. Ho won the C. J.C.
Metropolitan, beating Lady Emma, Leonora, Turquoise, JNelson, and other well-know <i performers. His next win was the Free Handicap at the Auckland Summer Meeting when he earned Sst 121 b. On this occasion he conceded 121 bto Minerva nnd Ist 121 bto Admimstrat r fid won by a length. The next time his name was bracketed was at the South Canterbury Autumn Meeting, when he placed the J.C. Handicap to his credit. The time was 2min 30sec, for the mile and a half which is the record of Martini-Henry for the same distance. In this race he gave Olbs to Wapiti and 21bs to Lady Emma. At the Wellington R.C. Meeting he was first psst the post in the Autumn Handicap, carrjuv; Bst 121 b. He beat Ascot 7st 81b, Clogs 7st 51b, Administr itor Bat 101 b, Speculation Bst 01b, and several other cracks. At the Dunedin Spring MeetLig he came in f cont of Ike and Nelson, and again at the Auckland Summer Meeting he had behind him Administrator, irishwoman, and Witiora, to all of wlura he conceded substanti.' weight At Wellington again.he ran second to Administrator for the Gold Cup, giving Olbs to the winner, and beating Tigredia and Black Rose In the Wellington Cup he ren into third place, Tasman and Tigredia bein^ first and second le. spectively. The Dnnedin J.C. Handicap found him occupying the second place of honour, Tas man being first. He headed Captiun Webster, Lady Emma, July, and two others. His time will be found good all through, and for a quicker performer reference will have to be made to Australian rtcords, for no better can be found in New Zealand sporting annals. As a 6-year-old he did not gain a winning bracket, as his leg prevented him from being wound up propeily. SOU-WESTER will be at Moore and Cunle'a Station, Kai Iwi, Maxwelltown, and Nuknmaiu on Mondays, No. 2 Line on Saturdays, and the remainder of the week at home.
