ARRIVAL OF THE STORMBIRD.

The Stormbird, after undergoing considerable alterations and improvements during the last few months at Wellington, arrived at the wharf thi3 morning, aud was visited by a large number of residents, anxious to see how she looked after her overhaul. The general opinion is decidedly favorable, and there is no doubt the Stormbird is now the finest packet between Wanganni and Wellington. In addition to a considerable increase iv length and height, which have made her carrying capacity up to about 250 tons, she has \mdergone other alterations to such! a considerable extent that the boat is hardly recognisable. The main hatch, which is fore of all the cabins, is a large one, capable 'of admitting the biggest packages brought to this port, and the main hold will be used for cargo. Aft of the ladies cabin there is a lazarette, with accommodation for about 2t tons, which will be utilised for passengers' luggage. The main saloon is a large and handsome one, capable of accommodating thirty passengers, and it is decidedly the best on the line, being both spacious and capitally furnished. The berths are large, and well fitted, while the seats, of crimson velvet, are very tempting. Both this and the ladies cabin are handsomely grained, with panels. Adjoining the main cabin is the steward's pantry through, which all provisions can be handed direct to the cabin. Passing from main cabin by a passage, on the side of which is a convenient lavatory, &c, with the chief officer'sand engineer's cabins we come to the engine room. The boat has been fitted with new engines and immense boilers, which should give her a fine turn of speed. The accommodation in this department is very complete, the bunkers being at either side, and just at the top of the engine room is the engineer's workshop. Aft of the engines there is a comfortable smoking room (an innovation on this line) which will be a grateful acquisition to those lovers of the weed, who, while not wishing to go on deck, are unable to smoke in the main cabin. Should it be necessary the seats of this room can be used for bertha for half-a-dozen persons. The ladies' cabin is perhaps the best in the whole boat, and is beautifully fitted, with a capacity for 22 passengers. The berths here, also are comfortable, and the accommodation most complete. The cushions are very pretty, being of light blue silk, and we have no doubt thisapartment will be well looked for by lady passengers to the Empire City. The Captain's cabin is above the.ladies' cabin, and is a comfortable little room. Taken as a whole, the boat is greatly improved, and her lines also are none the worse for the change. She is a credit to the line, and we have no doubt the owners will be well recouped for their outlay. (per united press association.) Greymotjth, Dec 13. — Arrived — Oreti and Murray from Hokitika. Sailed — Wallabi for Wanganui, Mahinapua for Dunedin and intermediate ports. Weather still unsettled,.
