DEATH OF MR POWDRELL.
OPENING OF THE RAILWAY TO CARLYLE.

Patia, August 13. Mr J. D. Powdrell, the well-known racing man, died yesterday afternoo.i, of congestion of the lungs. On Saturday afternoon a large public meeting was held, at which it was decided to form a company to be called the West C last Meat and Produce Company, with a capital of £6000, in £5 shares. Much enthusiasm was displayed, and a large number of shares have already been applied for. At a public meeting on Saturday evening, it was resolved to celebrate the opening of the line on the 23rd by a luncheon on the arrival of the trr in from Wanganui, and a ball in the evening. Mr Rotherham will be asked to run a free train to Manutahi and back during the afternoon. Major Atkinson will be invited to attend to declare the line open, and other invitations will include Sir W. Fox.Mr Maxwell.and the district railway officials and local bodies.
