The House Avent into Committee on the Port Chalmers Drill Shed Bill, which Avas passed. In Committee on the Law Practitioners Act Amendment Bill, Mr Whi taker moved that progress be reported. — The Committee divided : Ayes, 5 ; Noes, 35. — On clause 2, Mr. Suttou objected to the Bill going any further, and in explanation stated that it was a measure meant to meet the peculiar case of a member of the House. The gentleman in question Avas an articled clerk, and had come into the House knoAvinp the disqualification he Avas incurring in reference to the profession for which he was studying. If the Bill Avent far enough so as to provide fo r the case of other persons besides members o the House, he Avould be prepared to ciccept^ it ; but he could not admit the right of the House to legislate for themselves. He moved that progress be reported. — Negatived on the voices. — Mr McCaughan described the conduct of his opponent as blackguard conduct and coAvardly. He hoped they Avould continue their sitting, so as to defeat such unseemly conduct. — Hon Mr Hall said he was not opposed to the Bill, but he pointed out that public business was being interfered Avith, and he asked the Committee to adjourn the measure. — Mr Whitaker took exception to the language of the member for Riverton. He described it as a sudden outpouring of an inexperienced young man, for whom he Avas sorry. Mr McCaughan having left the House lie Avould say no more, — On the suggestion of the Premier, further opposition Avas Avithdrawn, and on progress being reported the Bill was reported Avith amendments and passed.
