THAT LETTER BUSINESS.

TO THE EDITOB.

Sib, — In your issue of last night, Mr Ferry says I know nothing about the suppressed letter, and that I am "stirring up dirty water." Now, Sir, I think it was Mr Perry who stirred up the water,' and there is not the slightest doubt he is getting the thick of it. Mr Ross' letter, which also appeared last night, makes the case still worse against the late Captain, and bears me out in my previous statements. Further, Sir, I myself heard Mr Hughes state that "Fair Play's" letter was correct ia every particular. Mr Ferry must have misunderstood me when he says " certain members observed the letter put back into Hughes' pocket." ■ I must 'inform him that this information was gained in a' casual conversation with Mr Hughes, and I do not think any unprejudiced person could take the same meaning from my words as Mr Ferry has. He then accuses the Club of meanness; and also of casting a slur on his character. I inferred from his first explanation that ha was trying to pub the blame on Mr Hughes. Now, Sir, if the conclusion I arrive at is correot, where is the meanness ? I consider the latter part of Mr Ferry's letter an insult to the whole Club, and would suggest that a special meeting be called and th£ matter at once settled. As I have Mr Hughes' word (in which I place the most implicit confidence) that my version of the matter is correct, 1 must' decline to hold any further controversy with Mr Ferry on this subject.— l am, &c« , Faib Play. ,
