THE EDUCATION BOARD VACANCIES.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sib. — Allow me, Sir, to thank the Wanga* nui School Committee for their expression of opinion against the nomination of another parson on the Education Board, and I trust the example will be followed by the other Committees. One Presbyterian Minister is' quite enough on a Board entrusted with the care of secular education. School Committees must not grumble at the hyperborean dialect of |an Inspector if at an election they put in men who are so easily led by " varry loocid argooments." Then the Hon Mr Fox seeks election. In the first place that gentlemen at present is compelled to be in Wellington for about one third of the 1 year.so that during that time his duties as a member of the Board are neglected. In the next place I have not noticed that Mr Fox has shewn himself in any way as a brilliant member. Doubtless he is good as the rest, but to make upfor his four months absence the Committee should have a better representative. He certainly did take a great interest in the appointment of the staff for the Wanganui School, and I trust a little more light will in time be thrown on his action in this respect. The other members of the Board took his ip&c dixit relative to the application of Mrs Dawson, and that lady's chance of the Head Mistressship was effectively spoiled by Mr Fox. He accused that lady of severity and harshness, and so impressed his colleagues with the dreadful character of the applicant that her letter was thrown out. The charges made by Mr Fox are indignantly denied, and I certainly think Sir, that some opportunity should be granted her of disproving Mr Fox's statements. Any way I think the "junior member " shouldjbe relieved of the responsibility attaching to a seat oh the Board. Of the other candidates mentioned I think Messrs Homer, Godwin, Noake, and Sanson would make useful members. Of a surety the ' Committee that I have the honor to belong to will certainly not vote for either the Rev Mr Doull, or Hon Mr Fox.— Yours, &0,, A COUNTRYMAN. February 21, 1879.
