DUNEDIN, Oct. 2.

At the Annual Horse Show the entires were numerous, and the Show was more than, usually good, but it lost much of its attractiveness in consequence of railway interruption.

The water has slightly subsided at Level's flat, but the line from there to Balclutha is still under water. . Napier, Oct. 2. There is a strong suspicion that the fire at the Spit yesterday morning was the work of an incendiary. An inquest is to be held to-morrow afternoon, when it is expected evidence will be given showing that some person out of enmity to Benker's, on whose premises the fire originated, set them on fire. Patea, October 3. Four hundred feet of rubble work on the breakwater has tended to straighten the channel and give deeper water on the bar. Concrete blocks are being made and will be laid- in deep water on the arrival of the tramway rails from Wellington, which will further straighten and deepen the channel. Much regret is felt here at the deletion of endowments from the Harbour Bill. It is still hoped that borrowing powers, will be granted to enable the first portion of the works to be finished, and so put the district in direct communication with Wellington and other ports,

The boy, Taylor, says the natives threatened to shoot him if he proceeded.' The mnn, Stewart, says he was also obstructed by natives, and was afraid to go on ; therefore he turned back. An explanation given of the nffair here is that these natives may possibly be some of the parties out in search of Hiroki, and may have warned the man and boy that the murderer was about and would probably shoot them if they went on.
