There has been a terrible railway calamity in France, caiued by the. breaking of the bridge owing to heavy rain and storms. The carriages fell .on top of each other and immediately disappeared in the river, where they were broken up by the strength of the stream. Those of th« travellers who were not killed by the fall were unable to escape from tho waggons in which they were impvisoned,aucl were carried down the river until dashed to pieces against the rocks and slowly drowned. Thirty bodies have been" already recovered, but this does not represent the number of victims of the accident.
Eruption of Vesuvius continues unabated.
