VOLUNTEER REGULATIONS.

The following* circular has heen received by the officer commanding the district: — Colonial Defence Office, Wellington, 21st Nov., 1868. Sir,—ln the present unsettled state of i the Northern Island, it is considered by the Government that in districts where the Militia have been called out for service, means should be adopted to render the ■ various volunteer companies more efficient, and in order to assist in accomplishing so desirable an object, I am directed to suggest to Officers Commanding, that persons who have at any time withdrawn their names from the roll of volunteers, or who may have been struck off the same for breach of discipline or other causes, should not be re-elected in the event of their making application to that effect. The Government are fully aware the power of election rests solely with the members of a company themselves, and that the admission of individuals cannot be interfered with by authority, but they leave the matter in the hands of the volunteers themselves, with full confidence in their public spirit and patriotism. I am further instructed to request that officers commanding will report through the proper channel all members of volunteer companies who may be absent with-

out leave for mote than two inspections or three ordinary parades, in Urder that steps may. be taken to have such persons struck off the strength of the corps, and their names inserted in the militia rolls. I have, &c, C. E. Hatjghton, f*. Acting Under Secretary.
