Dr. N. H. Prior, Perry Street, has returned from a holiday visit to Botorua. The engagement is announced of Vida Joyce May, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs B. B. Sayer, Dalefield, Carterton, to Ernest Alexander (Mick) Pickett, only son of Mr and Mrs E. J. Pickett, Makotuku, Hawke’s Bay, The Bev. J. E. Jones, of Masterton, who left by the Bangitata on 26tli August last for England, will spend a few weeks there before proceeding to take up work at the C.M.S. Mission S .hool, Cliapra, India. The Public Service Commissioners yesterday announced the appointment of Mr. E. V. Paul, accountant, to the position of Government Printer, in place of Mr. G. H. Loney, who retired recently. Since 1927 he has been accountant of the Government Printing and Stationery Department. The death took place at Carterton early yesterday morning of Mrs. Adeline Gibbons, wife of Mr. James Gibbons, of Kent Street, at the age of 72 years. The late Mrs. Gibbons was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Dok, of County Tyrone, Ireland, and at the age of 16 years came out to New Zealand with her sister, landing in Auckland. After spending a few years there she came to Wellington, where she married 25 years ago, and came to Carterton to live. Until recently she had enjoyed excellent health. There is no family.
Two clever young New Zealanders, formerly of Masterton, are making remarkable progress in the musical w irld in London. They are Miss Vivienne Blamires, A.8.C.M., who was recently awarded an extension for a third year of the Associated Board for New Zealand at the Boyal College of Music, London, for violin, and Miss Betty Blamires, A.8.C.M., who has gained an additional exhibition for pianoforte and has also been awarded the Janet Heriot Thomson Scholarship at the same college. '
