Those who can remember Hawke’s Bay Rugby of 30 to 40 years ago, will remember the Maori player, Wi Duncan, whose sparkling play caused many a thrill. He died recently at Rotorua at the age of 71 years. Wi Duncan was also an all-round athlete. He lived at the Waipatu Pa for many years, and it was while there that he owned and trained a few thoroughbreds. Well over thirty years ago, at Greenmeadows, “Wi” caused a sensation when he produced “The Pony” to win and return a dividend of over the century mark. Taniwha was a hurdler above the average that this late sportsman owned and trained; Some few years ago at Wairoa, when breaking in an outlaw horse, he met with a very serious accident that crippled him for life. After that he went to live at Rotorua. Both Maori and pakeha friends throughout Hawke’s Bay will regret to hear of his demise.
