MEAT QUOTAS.
A ’very strong feeling exists among business men to the effect that the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates should go Home with the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, not so much to more fully represent New Zealand at the King’s Jubilee celebrations, as to join in the struggle for the Dominion’s rights in the marketing of her produce, particularly meat, in Great Britain. Mr Coates is thoroughly au fait with the deliberations and findings of the Ottawa Conference, and therefore is well qualified to resist any inclination to whittle down the concessions granted and promises made to New Zealand on that occasion. There is nothing in the administration of the different departments under the Finance Minister’s control that cannot be delegated to other Ministers for the short period that the Prime Minister and Mr Coates would be absent from New Zealand. The marketing position of New Zealand produce in Great Britain at the present time is exceedingly grave, and therefore no stone should be left unturned in the effort to obtain just treatment. In the event of Mr Coates finally deciding against going to England, the Hon. W. D. Stewart, ivho also attended the Ottawa Conference, should be sent Home.
