MAURICEVILLE NOTES

(Own Correspondent.) School Picnic. Notwithstanding that the weather was against holding the annual picnic and prize-giving of the Mauriceville School outdoors yesterday a very enjoyable time was spent by children and parents in the hall. The conduct of the children throughout the day reflected great credit on the control of the teacliMr Jas. McGovern presented the prizes, whilst in addition each child received a toy. The dux prize was won by Master Fred Scherf and the adults events resulted as follows: — Married ladies’ race: Mrs P. McKeown 1, Mrs H. Neilsen 2. Young ladies’ race: Miss Jean McGovern 1, Miss Jean Rossiter 2. Consolation race: Miss Alice McGovern,!, Miss Twentyman 2. Committeemen’s race: Mr A. Neilsen 1, Mr F. Scherf 2. # * * * Sports Meeting.

Large entries are expected at the meeting of the Mauriceville District Sports Club, to be held on Mr A. E. Clarke’s grounds at Mauriceville on Saturday next, 2nd March. Some of the best horsemen in the Wairarapa and Bush districts are expected to compete for the various cups and prizes offered. There is the Heckler Cup for the most points in horse events, and the W.F.C.A. Rose Bowl for the most points in ladies’ horse events, in addition to the liberal prize money and many cups and medals for the children’s events. The Club has also decided to offer a prize for the best hack on the grounds. The public is offered additional interest in the shape of amateur athletic events, weight-judg-ing and chain-stepping. A new item is provided by the addition of Highland dancing and it is hoped that competitors will support the Club in this new venture.

The grounds are ideal for picnicking and hot water will be supplied free. A dance as a fitting wind-up to the day ■will be held in the evening and a bus will leave the Masterton P.O. at 7.15 p.m. * « * * Personal.

Miss Dulcie Palmer is on a motoring tour of Taranaki.

The many friends of Mrs Hartley Myers will be pleased to learn she is making good progress and hopes to leave hospital next' week. The many friends of Mr C. Eekhold will bo pleased to know he has been able to leave hospital and is recuperating at home.,
