POWER BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. (Special Reporter.) Tho monthly meeting of the Wairarapa Electric Power Board was held this morning, Mr A. Campbell Pearce presiding. The secretary-manager’s report for tho previous two months (DecemberJanury) presents a most buoyant financial aspect, the revenue being decidedly up and expenditure down on the estimates made at the beginning of the financial year. The revenue for December was £2826 2s 7d, and for January, 1935, £3878 19s 3d, some £365 more than the estimate for tho two months. The revenue from bulk supply also exceeded the estimate for OctoberDeecmber, 1934, quarter by £357. To date the total gain on the estimate was: —Retail consumers, £1631 19s 4d; bulk supply, £356 Os 8d; total, £I9BB, for ten months. Trading, too, has shown a marked increase. The turnover of the installation department for 10 months was £4096 11s 4d, showrooms £1638 7s 3d, repairs £964 Is Bd, a total of £6699 Os 3d, the estimate being £5200 for 12 months.

It was reported that the amount actually spent on storm damage to the end of January was £2260 19s 9d. The final figures for the year will be greatly affected by storm damage, but nevertheless, the present indications point-,to. v ,tlja Board coming out square for the financial year ending 31st March, 1935. Construction—that is, entirely new work —has absorbed £2363 16s lid for the 10 months, and the estimate of £2468 5s 3d for the year will probably be exceeded during the next two months. The engineer’s report indicates that tho outside staff’s activities have been well maintained for the past two months. Forty-three service connections have been run, and there remains only about 10 per cent of the storm damage to bo dealt with. Some of this work will have to be left until winter, as it will be necessary to shut down for the repairs to be done, and at present this would cause consumers too _ much inconvenience. The reconstruction of the 11,000 v. line at Te Wliiti to supply Pike Bros, was completed and livened on 16th January. Four new street, lights of bracket type have been added to Masterton street lighting, two in Michael Dixon Street and two in College Street, and 29 chains of low tension have been erected on Hughes ’ Road to supply A. and J. Gray’s mana-. ger’s residence. The construction of the 11,000 v. line across the Ruarnahanga River to the site of tho Wairarapa South County Council’s crushing plant at Gladstone has been completed, and is ready to liven when required. Forty-four chains of single phase have been erected to supply a small pumping plant for Mr G. Sutherland, Kahutara. The only major interruptions to supply occurred in the Featherston area, one on 17th and one on 24th January, both due to'faulty loops on 11,000volt take-offs. It was stated that the monthly load statistics at the Wairarapa Sub-Station show an increase in units supplied, and the position is very satisfactory. At the headworks both piants have been operating successfully, and tho Kourarau Stream still retains approximately its normal summer flow, no shortage of water having been experienced. New consumers continue to be connected to tho mains, as well as additional work to old installations being carried out. The total loading connected under this heading for December-January was 218.5 k.w.’s, and the estimates accepted to 31st January were:—Masterton 2527. Carterton 961, Greytown 377. Featherston 533, Martinborough 467: total 4865. Consumers connected: Masterton 2519, Carterton 959, Greytown 376, Fcatherston 533, Martinborough 467; total, 4854.
