MORTGAGE SCHEME Jiorc views on the mortgage corpornti*n proposal were expressed in the House of Representatives _ yesterday, chief interest being taken in those ot the Hon. W. Downie Stewart (Govt., Dunedin West), former Minister of Finance. Dangers associated with the creation of an institution magnitude contemplated under /the Mortgage Corporation Bill were p'ointcd out by Mr Stewart. He said he preferred to sec several independent mortgage corporations established on a decentralised basis instead of one large corporation. As an alternative, ho advocated an extensfcjn of the scope of the rural of the State Advances Office, as recommended by the Rural Credits Commission of 1926. Ho Ministerial contributions were made to yesterday’s debate, but the Minister of Justice, Hon. J. G. Cobbe, will speak probably this afternoon.
