THE CHIEF SCOUT
CAMP FIRE, WELCOME. HASTINGS, Wednesday. A camp fire welcome attended by some hundreds of Scouts and Girl Guides was given to Lord BadenPowell at Beatson Park this evening. Besides a large representation of the town and surrounding district of Hastings there were large contingents from Napier, Manawatu and the smaller towns of Hawke’s Bay. Great interest was shown by the public. Commissioner Cooksey was in charge of the proceedings and speeches of welcome were made by Mr A. I. Rainbow, DeputyMayor of Hastings, and Mr C. O. Morse, Mayor of Napier. The evening was spent in true Scout fashion. The public were entertained to a programme of liakas, Scout cries and chorus singing. In honour of his seventy-eighth birthday on Friday, Lord Baden-Powell was presented with a New Zealand rug, which he promptly draped about himself before making his speech of thanks. His informal manner of acting and speaking and his vigorous utterance and youthful geniality made a great impression on everyone.—(P.A.)
