From “the winterless North” comes the story of the chap who thought he’d grow his own tobacco, smoke it, and save money. First time he lit up the missus came running in with: “What’s that burning?—smells like old rag, or something.” Hubby was annoyed. “Old rags, indeed! I’ll teach her!” he growled. So a few nights later he said to her: “I’ve improved that ’bacca of mine a lot. You tell me what you think of it now”—and he lit up again. The missus sniffed —and sniffed. “You never made that bacca, Jimmy,” she declared at last, “because you jolly well couldn’t. Why, it smells lovely!” He had to own up! He was smoking “toasted New Zealand” —Cut Plug No. 10! The lady was right. “Homemade” can’t compete with “toasted.” Where is the tobacco that can? For purity, fragrance and flavour it stands alone. It’s so harmless, too. The toasting does it! Five brands only of the genuine toasted —Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullsliead), Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Cavendish, Riverliead Gold and Desert Gold. 457
