HOMING PIGEONS
MASTERTON CLUB. The Mastcrton Racing Pigeon Club (senior) flew its first young bird race of the season on Saturday from Ohakune, an airline distance of 110 miles. The birds were liberated by the stationmaster at 11 a.m. in boisterous weather, and flew against a strong southerly headwind. The first eight placings were; —c. J. Douglas’s Cameronian. 761.7 yards per minute, 1; C. J. Douglas’s Scotia, 760.4, 2; W. Steer’s Haeremai, 754.5, 3; J. A. Bock’s Repeater. 754.1, 4; W. Steer’s Kia Ora, 752.8, 5; J. A.: Mock’s Gloria, 559, 6; Y. Stcars’ Blue Lad 7, Y. Stears’ Blue Lass 8. A new member, Mr V. Stears, who was an engineer-pilot in France during the Great War, gave an interesting talk on his experiences with pigeons carried in fighting ’planes. ' Many pilots and observers, he said, owed their lives after a crash to these game little messengers.
JUNIOR CLUB EVENT. The Mastcrton Junior Homing Pigeon Club competed in a young bird race from Ohakune on Saturday. As the result of rough weather conditions only four birds arrived on the day, these being:—J. Wickens’ Gay Pied 1, M. Smith’s Winning Hit 2, G. Chapman’s Silver Queen 3, Kearns Bros.’ Red Knight 4. Also competed: W. Orsborne, C. Adams, A. Liidemann, and E. Hirst.
