SWIMMING
NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS,
AUCKLAND, Sunday. Inspiring enthusiasm was manifested during the contests for titles at the opening session of the New Zealand swimming championship meeting m the tepid baths on Saturday evening. In the 220 yards men’s breaststroke, a New Zealand record was established, the winner (L. Smith, Wanganui) lowering his own standard from 3nnn. 4scc. to 3min. 1 l-ssec. W J. Jarvis (Otago) scored brilliantly in the 100 yards men’s free style. Miss Mona Leydon (Auckland) won the 220 yards ladies’ free style m similar fashion, and Watkins (Hawke s Bay) the mile. Watkins’ time was much outside the record, but by registering 55 2-ssec. and 2min..4G 2-sscc., respectively, Jarvis and Miss Leydon each failed to equal the records by twofifths'of a second. Swimmers from whom titles were wrested were N. Crump (Auckland), m the sprint, and Miss Nancy Ludlow (Auckland), in the ladies’ furlong. The mile was not defended by D. P. Lindsay (Manawatu). At present Auckland, the holder, leads for the Yaldhurst Shield. Points have been scored as follow: Auckland 13 points, Otago 6, Hawke’s Bay and Wanganui 5, Southland 3, Canterbury !• —(P.A.)
